FOTD Episode 11: The Trouble With Twin Studies – Does Our DNA Make Us Who We Are? (with Jay Joseph)

Twins separated at birth studies are problematic for multiple reasons.

Studies comparing twins reared together to siblings doesn’t isolate genetics because the environment is different for each sibling cohort.

A whole bunch of claims about genetics rest on these bad studies or claims that these studies don’t strongly support.

US wins against Russian and Chinese air defenses in other countries may risk teaching the wrong lessons

“While the US can draw a certain degree of confidence in its capabilities from the success of the mission, there’s a risk of reading too much into that success, especially when it comes to weapons made by American rivals in the hands of other militaries.

Some of the failures of the Venezuelan-operated foreign air defenses, for example, have been attributed to issues like inactivity, incompetence, and a dearth of functional cohesion between different systems.

Wins in Venezuela during Operation Absolute Resolve or in operations against Iranian-operated Russian-made air defenses may not translate the same in fight with Russia or China.”

Why Firing Someone Is Almost Impossible in South Korea | AB Explained

Korea’s labor laws make firing employees very difficult. These strict laws drew out of the horrible working conditions during Korea’s economic rise under a dictatorship. Making it that hard to fire employees leads to: bad employees lowering companies’ efficiency, companies hiring fewer employees, companies keeping workers as contract employees or independent contractors and the employees therefore not getting basic benefits, brain drain as good employees can more easily move up the ranks and make more money in other countries, and discourages foreign companies from investing in Korea.

What video shows in the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis

“An officer shoves a person next to Pretti. Pretti steps between them, holding his hands up as the officer sprays a substance toward his face. Pretti appears to be holding his phone in his right hand, and his left hand is empty.

Several more officers surround Pretti, bringing him to the ground near the curb as they hit him repeatedly.

Just before the first gunshot, one officer emerges from the scrum. The first shot is then heard, followed by more gunfire as the camera swings away.”

BREAKING: MN Shooting Victim IDed, New Video of Incident

It looks like ICE saw that the man was armed, and shot him. Being armed is legal, and just being armed doesn’t make someone a threat. ICE started the physical altercation with him and he doesn’t seem to be reaching for his gun or anything like that, although the video isn’t clear.

Like Renee Good, the Trump administration blatantly lied about the situation, giving us no confidence that the situation will be properly investigated. Blatantly lying about the state killing a citizen is a hallmark sign of a tyranny.

Why Didn’t Early Modern Armies Always Dig In?

Early modern armies knew about trenches and fortifications and used them often, but these wars didn’t turn into WWI style trench wars because trenching takes a lot of labor and locks in positions that the enemy can just go around. There were fewer scenarios where you could know that the enemy would attack you in a particular position, so building a trench would just get you avoided. Part of warfare is maneuvering around and trying to start a battle when you have the advantage, but if you want to engage the enemy, they wouldn’t fight you if you are entrenched in too strong a position, unless they had to.
